Treasure in Life to Come
Mark 10:21-22 (NIV®)
“Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will
have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” At this the man’s face
fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.
What you do with the material things entrusted to you in time will have
an impact on your life to come. This wealthy, young man had come to
Jesus to ask what was required to inherit eternal life. Jesus replied,
“Liquidate everything you have and follow Me.” The man was attached to
his money and his possessions and could not give them up. We don’t know
how his life ended, but I imagine it was filled with regret. There is a
link between your heart and your possessions. We only get one brief
lifetime, and what we do in time determines our reward for eternity. God
says it is a foolish perspective to spend your mortal life accumulating
things you can’t keep in eternity. I encourage you to take stock, not
only of your possessions, but your attitude toward them. Is your heart
set on the things of this world or the hope of the next?
THINK ABOUT IT
Scripture is full of this truth: “We only get one brief lifetime, and what we do in time determines our reward for eternity.”
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, help me release any earthly thing I am grasping and
singleheartedly grip the things of Your eternal Kingdom. I am grateful
for Your gifts of resources. But my greatest gift is Jesus and all He
offers through His shed blood. In His name, amen.
