Find Out What Pleases Jesus

Find Out What Pleases Jesus
Ephesians 5:8-10 (NIV®)
Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord.

I’ll admit it: I like to study systematic theology. I also like to dig into hermeneutics—the interpretation of Scripture, homiletics—the art of preaching, and exegesis—the critical analysis of Scripture. I even understand some of the big words I read there! But at the end of the day, my faith is not complicated at all: I just want to be Jesus’ friend, and I want to please Him. The essentials of those goals are clear enough that they have provided a framework for my life. If someone is your friend and you want to cultivate and deepen the relationship, you learn to understand the things that are important to them. You develop an interest in those things and work to learn more about them. You also work to understand what things are not pleasing to your friend, and you avoid doing those things. As I said, it’s pretty simple. I want to be God’s friend, and I want to please Him.

THINK ABOUT IT
Let’s find out what pleases the Lord. Scripture is filled with counsel concerning how to be His friend.

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, I want to honor You in my heart with my words and actions—forgive me for when I have not. Jesus, I ask You to forgive me when I’ve been embarrassed or quiet about my relationship with You. Help me learn to be a good and pleasing friend to You. In Your name, amen.
