Treasures In Heaven
Luke 12:15
Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
Many of us spend our time and energies as if our lives consisted of how much we own. Online shopping has increased this tendency greatly; we can now buy nearly anything with a few clicks from the comfort of our easy chairs. The result is that our packed cabinets and closets overflow into storage bins that are stacked in our attics and storage units. Our prized possessions sit there gathering dust and crumbling from age until we die and pass them on to our children and grandchildren, who shake their heads as they pack up their “inheritance” and drop it off at a thrift store . . . or the dump. We all need to own things, of course, and I’m not opposed to nice things; but Jesus tells us to “Watch out!” and be careful that our things don’t begin to define our lives. Jesus says our focus should be on accumulating the things that will matter in the life to come—“treasures in heaven”—so let’s focus on those things instead of amassing “treasures on earth” (Matthew 6:19-21).
THINK ABOUT IT
Take a look around your house. How much of your time and energy is spent on accumulating things that have no eternal value?
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank You for inviting me to invest my strength and resources in pursuit of Your agenda in my generation. Help me give priority to this rather than to earthly treasure, that I might bring glory to Jesus as Messiah and Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen
