Make Every Effort
2 Peter 3:14 (NIV®)
So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.
Peter is not writing to the Pagans to say, “You’re a mess, and you need to clean up your act.” He’s writing to the Church to say, “Because we’re looking forward to Jesus’ return to the earth, we need to make every effort to be spotless. You don’t want Him to come back and find you soiled with the choices of this world.” Staying spotless is a challenge for me. I have a hard time getting through a meal without a spot on my shirt. That’s because I’m being careless. In order to stay spotless, I have to slow down and pay attention to what I’m doing. I have to “make every effort.” Our spiritual lives are a little like that. Instead of living carelessly, we need to live intentionally, paying attention to what we consume and how we consume it. Are we gobbling down whatever the culture throws at us and allowing a few stains? Or are we choosing what will feed our spirits and making every effort to be found spotless?
THINK ABOUT IT
Living intentionally for the Lord and His Kingdom purposes requires gaining a God-perspective through knowing His Word and relating to Him through prayer. That will take an expenditure of determination and energy, and it will be worth it!
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, help me to consistently exert the effort needed to be found without spot, blameless, and at peace with You. May I eliminate anything in my life that hinders me from a lifestyle of determined focus on You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
