Fight For Your Faith
1 Timothy 6:11-12 (NLT®)
You, Timothy, are a man of God; so run from all these evil things.
Pursue righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love,
perseverance, and gentleness. Fight the good fight for the true faith.
Throughout this letter, Paul has listed things that he wants Timothy to
avoid. He then encourages Timothy to pursue righteousness and a godly
life. Notice that Paul doesn’t use passive words. He urges Timothy to
“run from” evil, “pursue” godliness, and “fight” for his faith. Have you
ever considered what tempts you and how to run from those temptations?
What tempts one person may not hold any pull at all for another. Some
people don’t like sweets, but I could easily make them the foundation of
my food pyramid. Some people are tempted to watch inappropriate
television shows and movies, and others are happy watching wholesome
fare. Some people are obsessed with money and what it can buy, and
others are happy with a simple life. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you
examine your thoughts, then help you avoid what you need to in order to
pursue righteousness and godly life. Don’t be passive; determine in your
heart to fight for your faith.
THINK ABOUT IT
Imagine every temptation as a bear or cougar chasing you through the
forest, and how hard you would need to run to outpace your pursuer.
That’s how hard we need to run from evil things that chase us down. God
will help you fight for your faith. He is our refuge.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, help me endeavor to know and understand ungodliness and
flee from it, running toward “a godly life, along with faith, love,
perseverance, and gentleness.” Help me to fight the good fight for true
faith in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
