Double-Edged Sword

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.

Life during New Testament times was a very hands-on existence. They didn’t buy their meat neatly shrink-wrapped. They took their meat from field to table, and they knew the value of a sharp knife. This imagery of a sharp, two-edged sword would have been vivid for them. They knew exactly what it meant to divide joint and marrow. That is what God’s Word is for us—the tool that cuts between soul and spirit, exposing our innermost thoughts and desires. The Bible is not always easy to understand. It was composed by many people over many generations. It’s centered in a part of the world we are not that familiar with, so some of its imagery is strange to us. But I encourage you not to give up on it. Its message is vital, or God would not have given it to us.

Open your Bible and ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate its message. Then, open your heart to what God wants to show you.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, I do not always understand every scripture passage I read, but I will trust You for what I do not understand and ask You to help me be faithful to what I can understand as I yield to its truth and obey You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
