Securing Our Filter

Securing Our Filter

Proverbs 23:7 (NASB®)
As he thinks within himself, so he is.

Scientists have determined by measuring brain activity, the average person has over six thousand distinct thoughts every day. Our thoughts are important because they determine our attitudes, our words, and our actions. Our minds are like canvases with many painters splashing paint onto them—the people we hear, the media we consume, the words we read, and more. Over the course of a day, we will have thoughts that are godly and thoughts that are ungodly. Isaiah said that God’s thoughts are higher than our thoughts as the heavens are higher than the earth (Isaiah 55:8-9). Paul advised the Romans to be about the business of renewing their minds because he knew they would choose to direct their minds toward the things of the world or the things of God (Romans 12:2). We are given the assignment, not just to accept every thought that comes to us, but to filter them, evaluate them, then accept and nurture the ones that promote godliness and reject the ones that don’t.

THINK ABOUT IT
We have a choice between which thoughts we allow to linger and which ones we kick to the curb.

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, You create and sustain all things. Therefore, I choose to walk in Your light, protecting my thoughts and emotions. I choose to fix my thoughts and attention on Your majesty and power, for You are my hope and my reward. In Jesus’ name, amen.
