A Wise & Godly Friend
Proverbs 11:1-4 (NIV®)
The Lord detests dishonest scales, but accurate weights find favor with him. When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity. Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.
Do you have a wise friend or two whose opinions you value greatly? God has placed some people in my life who have been faithful to steer me in the right direction. I have learned to pay attention when they say something as simple as, “I wouldn’t do that” or “I’d take advantage of that opportunity” or “Think carefully before you head down that path.” The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings that will help you chart a course toward happiness and contentment. The proverbs are brief and to the point. They tell us, quite frankly, what the outcomes of various choices will be. They tell us which doors to walk through and which ones to leave closed. They tell us which attitudes and behaviors will end in blessing and which will end in misery. Like a wise and godly friend, they are worth our attention.
THINK ABOUT IT
The book of Proverbs contains 31 chapters. Adding a chapter from Proverbs each day to your devotional time will help you read through God’s words of wisdom 12 times each year, bringing great spiritual benefit to your life.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, I rejoice in Your wisdom and strength. I want to serve You with all my heart, mind, soul, and body. Holy Spirit, illumine my thoughts to reflect God’s glory. May the living Word come alive within me—to guide, direct, restore, and renew. In Jesus’ name, amen.
