Cultivating Self-Control
Matthew 1:25 (NIV®)
But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
When you think of the Christmas story, what comes to mind? The baby in a
manger, angels on high, shepherds in a field, wise men bringing gifts?
How about self-control? Probably not, but here it is. Matthew says that
an angel had told Joseph that Mary was trustworthy, and that this
supernatural pregnancy would fulfill the prophecy that God’s Son would
be born of a virgin. We don’t know the details of Joseph’s reasoning,
but we are told that he chose not to consummate their marriage until
after this special baby’s birth. Self-control is a major aspect of this
story, even though the word is never mentioned. Long before we hear
about the fruits of the Spirit in the New Testament, we see one of those
fruits demonstrated here. I believe that as God awakens and prepares
His people for the end of the age, we will need a level of self-control
we haven’t needed in a long time. It is impossible in our own strength,
but it is one of the fruits of a Spirit-filled life.
THINK ABOUT IT
Asking the Lord to show you where you need more self-control, and then
asking the Holy Spirit to help you obey will result in much good fruit.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, open my heart to Your truth and grant me understanding
regarding self-control in every area of my life. I choose to walk in
holiness and purity before You and gain the strength to turn away from
destruction. May the fruit of self-control grow in all my life. In
Jesus’ name, amen.
